How Can I Achieve Recovery from Drugs or Alcohol?

When you decide you are ready to leave substance use in the past, we can help. However, it’s not safe to abruptly stop using alcohol or drugs (“cold turkey”). Withdrawal symptoms can be challenging and may lead to intense cravings, and potentially even life-threatening complications.

Substance use disorder affects individuals physically, emotionally, and spiritually. It can be difficult to overcome without professional help, but remember, you don’t have to face it alone. Recovery isn’t easy, but with the right support, it’s possible.

The steps to recovery include:

Step 1: Medical Intake

A registered nurse will discuss your substance use and help you understand its effects on your life. Your drug use history will be documented, and an individualized treatment plan will be introduced.

Step 2: Medically Supervised Detox

This is a personalized detoxification process where the remnants of drugs are removed from your body under medical supervision. This ensures that withdrawal symptoms are manageable, and you remain comfortable. Detox is just the first step; continued treatment is crucial for long-term recovery.

Step 3: Maintaining Abstinence

It takes about 90 continuous days of abstinence to reach the “maintenance” stage. During this time, you will learn to identify triggers and develop strategies to prevent relapse. You will also learn to replace unhealthy behaviors with positive ones.

Step 4: Advanced Recovery

After about five years of sobriety, you will continue to use the skills you’ve learned and create long-term goals for a fulfilling life without drugs or alcohol. Recovery is a lifelong process requiring ongoing commitment and support.
