Why Does Breastfeeding Matter?
Breast milk is made just for your baby. It’s the perfect mix of nutrients, easy to digest, and helps your baby grow healthy and strong.
Benefits of Breastfeeding:
- Better nutrition: Breast milk has the right balance of protein, fat, and vitamins.
- Stronger immunity: It helps protect your baby from colds, ear infections, and other illnesses.
- Lower risk of SIDS: Breastfed babies are less likely to experience sudden infant death syndrome.
- Saves money: Breast milk is free—and your body makes more the more you nurse.
- Healthier for you, too: Breastfeeding helps your body recover after birth and lowers your risk for diabetes, breast cancer, and ovarian cancer.
Some parents may not be able to breastfeed for medical reasons. If you’re unsure, talk with your doctor or WIC counselor about safe feeding options.
Supporting Your Milk Supply
At WIC, we believe in empowering you to meet your breastfeeding goals. Your body makes milk based on how often and how well your baby nurses—it’s all about supply and demand!
Here’s how you can support a healthy milk supply:
- Feed often: Aim for 8–12 feedings in 24 hours, especially in the early weeks.
- Follow your baby’s cues: Look for signs like rooting, sucking on hands, or fussiness. These are signals your baby is ready to eat.
- Check the latch: A deep, comfortable latch helps your baby get more milk and tells your body to keep making it.
- Limit supplementation unless needed: Using formula can lower your baby’s demand for breast milk, which may reduce your supply.
- Take care of yourself: Drink water, eat nourishing foods, and rest when you can—your body needs fuel to make milk!
If you have questions or concerns, WIC breastfeeding staff are here to help. You’re not alone—we’re here to support you every step of the way.
